What is the Off-Road MTB Tour?

The six-day off-road MTB tour takes you clockwise around the Sierra Nevada, starting and finishing in Lanjarón. Following 4×4 forestry tracks and a little non-technical singletrack, you’ll experience an incredible variety of terrain, scenery and constantly changing mountain views.

Breakfast and dinner are included each day, so you can refuel before and after your ride.

A support vehicle transfers your luggage between hotels and provides daily shuttles back onto the Transnevada route, meaning you only need to carry what you need for the day’s riding. Even on the longest day, two shuttles help take the edge off the biggest challenge.

During the summer months (roughly late June to mid-October, weather permitting), the route includes a ride over Pico Veleta, Europe’s highest road, followed by a descent on singletrack. Outside these months, we follow an alternative route around the mountain, keeping the adventure going.

This tour is perfect for you if:

✓ You ride a mountain bike regularly and are comfortable off-road
✓ You enjoy long days in the saddle up in the mountains
✓ You want to ride point-to-point rather than from one fixed base
✓ You want the riding sorted without having to organise hotels, luggage or logistics yourself

BIKES

Bring your own mountain/gravel bike or rent a bike with us.
Regular mountain bikes and e-MTBs are welcome. If you prefer not to travel with your own bike, we can arrange bike hire separately.

RIDING LEVEL

For fit, confident mountain bikers
The exact distance and climbing varies by stage, but expect proper days in the mountains rather than easy sightseeing rides.

Day by day
Day 0
Arrival in Lanjarón

Airport transfer from Málaga and first night in Lanjarón, famous for its spa and mineral waters and the gateway to the Alpujarras.

Day 1
Lanjarón → Trevélez
49 km1,220 m

Leaving Lanjarón, we climb into the Alpujarras and cross the spectacular Poqueira Valley, home to the white villages of Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira, with their flat roofs, narrow lanes and covered tinaos passages. From there we wind through the mountains to Trevélez, one of Spain’s highest villages at around 1,476 m, sitting beneath Mulhacén and famous for its mountain-cured ham.

Day 2
Trevélez → Puerto de la Ragua
50 km730 m

Riding east across the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, we follow quiet tracks through remote valleys and past traditional working farms. Look out for the terraced hillsides and acequias, irrigation channels whose roots go back to the time of Al-Andalus and still carry mountain water to the fields today. There’s also the chance of a refreshing dip in a waterfall along the way.

Day 3
Puerto de la Ragua → La Calahorra
85 km1,250 mHalf-day option 55 km

From Puerto de la Ragua we ride to the easternmost point of the tour in Almería before looping round the drier northern side of the Sierra Nevada, where the landscape changes completely. An extra shuttle after lunch eases the climbing. We finish beneath the castle of La Calahorra: a medieval-looking fortress on the outside, but inside it hides one of Spain’s earliest Italian Renaissance courtyards, built in Carrara marble in the early 1500s.

Day 4
La Calahorra → Guadix
55 km688 m

We ride through historic villages and open farmland to Guadix, one of the most unusual towns in Spain. More than 2,000 cave houses are carved into the soft clay hills here, with whitewashed chimneys poking out of the ground, and many are still lived in today. We finish in the old town beneath the grand cathedral, the perfect spot for a well-earned drink.

Day 5
Guadix → Güéjar Sierra
43 km1,000 m

Leaving Guadix behind, we ride back towards the heart of the Sierra Nevada, crossing open farmland and quiet mountain tracks as the landscape gradually changes. Enjoy sweeping views across the mountains before finishing in Güéjar Sierra, a traditional mountain village tucked into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

Day 6
Güéjar Sierra → Lanjarón
59 km835 mTwo route options

Our final ride back to Lanjarón follows one of two routes depending on the season. In summer, we climb high towards Pico Veleta before descending on wide singletrack. In the cooler months, we ride remote mountain tracks and quiet valleys around Dílar and the Sierra Nevada foothills before completing the loop back to Lanjarón.
