HOTEL-TO-HOTEL CYCLING IN SOUTHERN SPAIN | ★★★★★ 5-STAR RIDER REVIEWS
Guided, hotel-to-hotel road cycling tour from the Mediterranean through the Sierra Nevada.
Start in Almuñécar among the avocado and mango groves of the Costa Tropical and climb into the white villages of the Alpujarra. Ride on through the castle country and cave towns of the north, spend a night in Granada beneath the Alhambra, and finish with a spectacular descent all the way back to the sea.
The five-day road bike tour takes you on a loop from the Mediterranean into the Sierra Nevada and back, starting and finishing in Almuñécar on the Costa Tropical. On quiet mountain roads you’ll climb from subtropical avocado and mango groves to the white villages of the Alpujarra, ride the dry, open landscapes of the north past castles and cave houses, and spend a night in Granada, home of the Alhambra. The final day ends with a spectacular descent all the way back to the sea.
Breakfast and dinner are included each day, so you can refuel before and after your ride.
A support vehicle stays with the group throughout the day, carrying spares, food and water, while your luggage is transferred to the next hotel. You only ride with what you need for the day.
Want a shorter day? Day 3 has a short option (73 km instead of 104 km), and the support vehicle is always close by if you need a break from the saddle.
This tour is perfect for you if:
✓ You ride a road bike regularly and are comfortable with 70–100 km days
✓ You love long, steady climbs and big mountain descents
✓ You want to ride point-to-point rather than from one fixed base
✓ You want the riding sorted without having to organise hotels, luggage or logistics yourself
Bring your own road bike or rent one with us.
A serviced road bike with tyres in good condition is all you need. E-road bikes are welcome too. If you’d rather not travel with your own bike, we can arrange road or e-road bike hire separately.
For fit, confident road cyclists
Expect 66–104 km and up to 2,150 m of climbing a day, with long, steady mountain climbs rather than short, punchy efforts. These are proper days in the mountains, but with a short option on day 3 and the support vehicle always close by.
Airport transfer from Málaga and first night by the sea in Almuñécar, on the subtropical Costa Tropical. On the way, we can stop at Decathlon Málaga to stock up on nutrition and gear.
From the Mediterranean we follow the Guadalfeo river inland, through the rocky gorge near Vélez de Benaudalla and past the Rules reservoir, where Spanish ibex are often spotted on the steep slopes. After Órgiva, the capital of the Alpujarra, the climb begins to Pampaneira: a white mountain village of flat roofs, narrow lanes and covered tinaos passages, high in the Poqueira gorge.
The queen stage along the high road of the Alpujarra, the last refuge of the Moors after the fall of Granada. We ride through Trevélez, one of Spain’s highest villages and famous for its mountain-cured ham, then on through Pórtugos, Bérchules and Válor. Look out for the terraced hillsides and acequias, irrigation channels dating back to Al-Andalus. We finish in Laujar de Andarax, traditionally linked to Boabdil, the last Moorish king of Granada.
Today the landscape changes completely. We leave the wine valleys of the Andarax for the dry, almost desert-like country of Almería, in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada, before turning north around the mountains. We finish beneath the castle of La Calahorra: a fortress on the outside, but inside it hides one of Spain’s earliest Italian Renaissance courtyards, built in Carrara marble in the early 1500s.
We ride to Guadix, where more than 2,000 cave houses are carved into the soft clay hills and are still lived in today, and stop for a coffee in the old town beneath the cathedral. From there it’s on to Granada, the last capital of Moorish Spain. The evening is yours: walk the old streets of the Albaícín or enjoy a drink with a view of the Alhambra.
One last climb, then a spectacular descent all the way back to the sea. Leaving Granada, we pass the Suspiro del Moro, where legend says Boabdil turned for a final look at his lost city. We then ride the famous Carretera de la Cabra through the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama, a road used by the Vuelta a España in 2018, and descend through Otívar and Jete among avocado and mango groves to Almuñécar.
